In the cover story of the March 14 issue of Tone Report, I said that any list of great mini pedals simply had to include TC Electronic. Their history of killer sounding pedals, innovative micro-size designs and envelope-pushing peripheral technologies has deservingly turned a lot of heads over the past few years. And their newest offering, the Flashback Mini Delay, only continues that trend.
Featuring three knobs and “True to Tone” true bypass with analog-dry-through, the Flashback Mini might seem pretty straightforward. But packed snugly inside the “ultra-small” footprint, this thing packs a technological punch that you might not expect.
What we like: The TonePrint App.
TonePrint—and Beam—enabled, the Flashback Mini allows players to load any TonePrint available on the TC Electronic website directly onto the pedal—wirelessly—from an iOS- or Android-equipped smart phone. It sounds awesome. It is awesome.
Created by the likes of Troy Van Leeuwen, Guthrie Govan, Omar Rodríguez-López and Pro Guitar Shop, you can currently find more than 125 different TonePrints for the Flashback. We’re sure you’ll be able to find something you like.
Concerns: Too many tones, not enough time.
While I’m personally all for minis that offer tonal versatility, having more than a hundred available options might be a bit daunting for some players. Then again, maybe having too many options isn’t such a bad thing at all. Either way, if there’s a particular TonePrint you love or you’re someone who’s into experimenting with new delay sounds, the Flashback Mini could be the perfect addition to your arsenal.
At just over a hundred bucks, this new mini pedal from TC Electronic delivers about everything you could ever ask for in a mini—especially when you consider what the TonePrint app offers. You’ll have to be someone who is willing to dig into that kind of tech, but if you do, we’re sure you’ll be rewarded.
